Learning to Breathe in Bangalore
I was fresh out of high school aspiring to be a Doctor. Let’s leave that long story for another time but to cut it short, our distorted education system cast a Harry Potter spell on my future and decided not to grant me admission in the medical school that year.
Next best and closest career option that came up in every Google search was the booming Biotech and Bangalore came up as the biotechnology hub of India. Next big ambition that came up in my mind was to land my first job after graduation with Biocon, India’s largest bio-pharmaceutical company. Yes, as a teenager I could only see that far.
Like many youngsters across the nation I didn’t harbor the dream to move from my home-turf to any bigger cities. But our ambitions drive our destiny and that’s how I landed in Bangalore to pursue a degree in Biotechnology.
Bangalore is the place where I first sensed freedom. I felt lonely moving away from family, I struggled a bit stepping out of my comfort zone, but I also felt liberated. I was breathing and discovering myself all by myself.
Out of discomfort comes greatness. You feel like a horse that gallops with his lungs, perseveres with his heart and wins with his character.
For the first time, I was exposed to a city that could boast of a decent infrastructure, world class educational institutes, cosmopolitan culture, immense job opportunities and a gateway to exciting travel options in, around and further due to its excellent connectivity to the rest of world.
It is a city of dreams.
There’s no greater freedom than the freedom to be yourself. Bangalore gave me that gift, and the choice to surround myself with those who appreciate me for who I am.
An exposure and interaction with people from different geographies and ethnicity also led me to discover that freedom is not merely to cast of one’s own chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.
I had wings to fly, roots to go back to and reasons to stay!
Perspective of the Place:
Sometimes, only sometimes you need to step outside and give yourself a chance to discover who you are in real. Get some air. Breathe. Sometimes, the act of discovering who you are will inspire you to accept that you can go further than you think. Choose to shine. When in doubt, gallop!
