Memories Made Together Last A Lifetime

Ahmedabad is a home away from home! It snuggles, pampers and spoils you from the moment you arrive. It’s a city of growth and opportunity, mind and money, culture and cuisine, fun and frolic.

This city also happens to be the birthplace of my forefathers and where my parents were raised. So, a once in a year visit to our traditionally rooted home town became a family mandate, no matter what. I don’t recall a single summer vacation from school that wasn’t spent in Amdavad (as they like to call it).

Hence, Ahmedabad has become our spot for a family reunion. Like most people in India, I too have a big family. And that means a lot of cousins. I guess, God knew that one mother wouldn’t be able to handle us as siblings. So, he made us cousins. We may not take conscious effort to stay in touch as we drown in our day to day chores. But whenever we meet we pick up from where we left off, even when it’s been so long.

Many say that Ahmedabad is a city that grows on you. But I say, quite a bit of me (and my perspective) grew up in this city. Ahmedabad allows me to reminisce and laugh about those golden childhood days, pull a prank on a younger one and draw from the lifetime of wisdom of an older one.

Booming Amdavad

In fact, Ahmedabad is now popular as the Manchester city of India with a slew of infrastructure projects lined up, all set for the big leap. Our family ritual has been taking me to Ahmedabad every year for almost 3 decades now and this has brought me up close with its growth journey. I’ve literally watched it grow and am proud to see this unstoppable city outgrow, outperform and outshine in its own subtle way!

During peak hours this remarkable place bustles with traffic, noise, and air so thick you can chew it. But it wins you over with its wealth of architecture – from centuries-old Hindu and Jain temples, mosques and mausoleums to cutting-edge contemporary infrastructure. Then there's the fascinating maze of an old city, museums and monuments, fine-dining restaurants, and, the most sought-after street-food and night market scenes.

In Ahmedabad, business is a way of life. The city’s inhabitants (aka Amdavadis) are known to have a business mentality. With brilliant connectivity, and clean, well-linked wide roads and highways and business acumen flowing in the blood of its people, Ahmedabad is poised for growth.

Becoming an Amdavadi – Fashionably Foodie!

The modern world of fashion, television and Bollywood are often seen drawing inspiration from the wedding and festival costumes of Gujarat. The colorful, vibrant and stylish traditional attires worn by Amdavadi men and women are trends inspiring and a fashion statement in India and beyond.

Ahmedabad being the largest city of Gujarat, is also the land of Khakhra, Fafda, Thepla, Undhyoo, Khichyu and what not dangerous sounding, but mouth-watering delicacies. Our love for food exceeds our love for everything else. No, maybe its equivalent to our love for dancing to the tunes of Garba and Dandiya music anytime, anywhere! Yeah, we can’t pick just one!

Perspective of the Place:

Ahmedabad, the commercial capital of Gujarat, developed on the banks of the Sabarmati river has many perspectives to offer.

Every visit to this place reminds me of some very important life philosophies in just 3 simple words:

Chill, Thrill and Fulfill.

And that’s the perspective I bring home, every single time I return from Ahmedabad.

  1. Chill – Put family first. Eat, sleep, wake up, dress up, show up. You may not have it all together. But together you can have it all - when chilling with family.

  2. Thrill – Consider going into business. Not for the money, but for the thrill of problem-solving.

  3. Fulfill – Create your own fulfillment. Growth and development is more fulfillment than achievement.
